Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 9, 2026 · Last updated: July 21, 2026

HauntKeep ("HauntKeep", "the app", "we", "us") is an entertainment app for Instrumental Trans-Communication (ITC) experiments. This policy explains what data the app accesses, what happens to it, and the choices you have.

Plain-language summary. HauntKeep has no user accounts and no servers of our own. Your recordings, photos, session notes, and sensor readings stay on your device. We do not sell your data, show ads, or track you across apps. The only time information leaves your device automatically is when you choose to attach environmental context to a session: your approximate location is sent to a weather service to look up the day's conditions. You are always in control of anything you share.

HauntKeep is for entertainment purposes only. It is not a scientific, medical, or safety instrument and does not detect real supernatural phenomena.

1. Who this policy is for

This policy applies to the HauntKeep mobile application on Android (and iOS, where available). By using the app you agree to the practices described here.

2. Data HauntKeep accesses, and why

2.1 Microphone (audio recordings) — stays on your device

Modes such as EVP, Sound, and Spirit Box record audio from your device microphone so you can capture and review a session. Recordings are saved only in the app's private storage on your device. They are not uploaded to us or to anyone else. A recording leaves your device only if you explicitly share or export it using your device's share feature.

2.2 Camera (photos and live frames) — stays on your device

Modes such as Vision, SLS, Shadow, and the Investigation camera use your camera to capture or process images and video on your device (for example, enhancing a dark photo, or drawing a pose skeleton over the live view). All camera processing happens on your device. Images and video are saved only in the app's private storage and are never uploaded by us. They leave your device only if you choose to share or export them.

2.3 Approximate location — sent to a weather service, only when you ask

When you choose to add environmental context to a session (for example, the day's weather, sunrise/sunset, and moon phase), the app requests your device's approximate (coarse) location and rounds it before use. These approximate coordinates are sent to the third-party weather service Open-Meteo (https://open-meteo.com) to look up conditions for your area. We do not store your location on a server (we have none); the weather result is saved with your session on your device.

  • Location is used only for this optional feature, only in the foreground, and only when you tap to fetch environment. The app never tracks your location in the background.
  • If you deny location or are offline, the rest of the app works normally.

2.4 Device sensors — stay on your device

HauntKeep reads your device's magnetometer, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and battery status to drive its instruments and visualizations. These readings are processed on your device and are not transmitted off it.

2.5 Internet connections

Some features make network requests. Any internet request necessarily exposes your device's IP address to the server you connect to; this is inherent to how the internet works and is not used by us to identify or track you.

  • Environmental context: approximate location → Open-Meteo (weather, sun); space-weather (Kp index) → NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (https://www.swpc.noaa.gov).
  • Radio Sweep (atmosphere only): the app fetches a public directory of internet radio stations from radio-browser.info and streams audio from the public stations it selects. Station audio is atmosphere/ambience only and is not a detection of anything.

All of these connections use encrypted (HTTPS) transport.

3. What we do NOT do

  • No accounts. HauntKeep does not require or create a user account.
  • No servers of ours. We operate no backend; your content is not sent to us.
  • No analytics or tracking SDKs, no advertising, no ad identifiers.
  • No selling or sharing of personal data for advertising or marketing.
  • No background location and no background microphone/camera use.

4. Where your data is stored, and backups

Your recordings, captures, transcripts, session data, and app settings are stored in the app's private, app-scoped storage on your device. The app disables Android auto-backup and device-to-device transfer for this data, so these files are not copied to cloud backup through the app.

5. Your choices and controls

  • Permissions: microphone, camera, and location are each requested only when you open a feature that needs them, and you can deny or later revoke any of them in your device settings. Denying a permission disables only the feature that needs it.
  • Deleting your data: you can delete individual recordings, captures, and sessions within the app. Uninstalling HauntKeep removes all of its on-device data.
  • Sharing is opt-in: nothing is shared or exported unless you initiate it.

6. Children's privacy

HauntKeep is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children. It contains paranormal/horror-themed content and is not designed for young children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

7. Third-party services

HauntKeep contacts the third-party services listed in Section 2.5 solely to provide the features described. Their handling of requests is governed by their own privacy policies:

We share your approximate location only with Open-Meteo, and only for the optional environmental-context lookup described above.

8. Security

Network requests use encrypted (HTTPS) transport. On-device data is stored in the app's private storage and excluded from cloud backup. No system is perfectly secure, but because your content stays on your device and we operate no servers, the exposure surface is limited to your own device.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, noted in the app or store listing.
